CHIP DESIGN · COURSE

Tapeout, Yield & Silicon Bring-up

Carry a chip program from a frozen candidate to disciplined first-silicon decisions and then to a real, bounded production qualification without confusing paperwork, simulation, manufacturing, test, or field evidence. Translate requirements into owned gates and risks; reconcile one release state across physical, timing, power, test, security, and software-facing reports; package exact foundry data and control supersession; co-design die, package, board, power, signal, and thermal paths; retain lot-wafer-die identity through fabrication and probe; calculate yield with stable populations; connect production limits, bins, diagnosis, quality, and reliability to their evidence boundaries; execute safe staged bring-up; correlate prediction with characterization; publish controlled errata; and finish by qualifying one deliberately small digital ASIC through separate design-release and production-release certificates backed by real external artifacts.

Before this course: Completed Physical Design, Power & Signal Integrity; Design for Test & Manufacturing Test; and SoC Integration & Hardware Security. The academic core assumes frozen netlist/layout-shaped handoffs, MMMC and physical-verification evidence, DFT structures and test-program identity, software-visible maps, boot and lifecycle contracts, and traceable ECOs; it does not require foundry access. The final production qualification is different: it cannot be completed without lawful PDK, library, macro, deck, tool, IP, foundry or shuttle, package, production-test, calibrated laboratory, safety, fabricated-silicon, review, and release-authority evidence for the selected bounded product.

Requirements need measurable acceptance and owners

Objective: For “Requirements need measurable acceptance and owners,” what exact artifact or population is under decision, who owns the gate, and which downstream claims become invalid after one input changes?

Each requirement binds operating condition, metric, limit, measurement method, evidence stage, owner, reviewer, and disposition for failure. A tapeout program moves evidence across organizations, tools, physical artifacts, and irreversible schedules. Every claim must bind a design revision, configuration, PDK and library release, tool version, command, corner, waiver set, report digest, owner, reviewer, date, and acceptance authority. “Clean,” “released,” “qualified,” and “production ready” are not synonyms. A learner should be able to reconstruct who decided what, from which frozen inputs, against which threshold, and what remained unknown.

A gate is closed only when every mandatory requirement has current evidence or an explicitly authorized, bounded waiver. Derive this acceptance rule from the dependency graph and the named evidence owner. The worked case is Classify “runs fast” as unusable, then rewrite it as ≥800 MHz at a named voltage, temperature, mode, workload, and measurement method. The failure boundary is An unowned qualitative goal cannot support a release decision or failure triage. When an input changes, invalidate every downstream result whose assumptions or physical state changed; a green report from another revision is stale evidence, not partial credit. Predictions, simulations, foundry acknowledgments, wafer measurements, packaged measurements, and field observations remain separate layers.

A gate is closed only when every mandatory requirement has current evidence or an explicitly authorized, bounded waiver. Acceptance requires the exact evidence named here; no adjacent check, schedule pressure, expert opinion, or successful earlier revision substitutes for it.

For “Requirements need measurable acceptance and owners,” freeze the artifact or population named by this contract: Each requirement binds operating condition, metric, limit, measurement method, evidence stage, owner, reviewer, and disposition for failure. Construct a machine-readable manifest containing the identities that can invalidate this decision.

Use the point-specific acceptance rule “A gate is closed only when every mandatory requirement has current evidence or an explicitly authorized, bounded waiver.” Walk its upstream assumptions and downstream consumers, then reconstruct the stated case: Classify “runs fast” as unusable, then rewrite it as ≥800 MHz at a named voltage, temperature, mode, workload, and measurement method.

Inject this exact boundary: An unowned qualitative goal cannot support a release decision or failure triage. Capture the first invalid owner or observation, contain the affected inventory, restore the baseline, and rerun every invalidated check on one digest.

Classify “runs fast” as unusable, then rewrite it as ≥800 MHz at a named voltage, temperature, mode, workload, and measurement method. Predict the responsible gate, the exact identity mismatch or measurement, and the minimum safe containment before reading the trace.

  1. For “Requirements need measurable acceptance and owners,” list the frozen identities and decision population in this case: Classify “runs fast” as unusable, then rewrite it as ≥800 MHz at a named voltage, temperature, mode, workload, and measurement method. Translate its rates, times, counts, coordinates, or probabilities into consistent units and denominators.
  2. Apply “A gate is closed only when every mandatory requirement has current evidence or an explicitly authorized, bounded waiver.” while following the artifact or unit from source through transformation, inspection, decision, and handoff. Retain rejected and missing populations rather than selecting only passing data.
  3. Test the decision with “An unowned qualitative goal cannot support a release decision or failure triage.” Identify the first divergence, exposure and safe containment; restore the original state before stating the next authorized action and the claims still withheld.

Result: A gate is closed only when every mandatory requirement has current evidence or an explicitly authorized, bounded waiver. The trace closes only for its frozen population and evidence layer; document residual risk, invalidated consumers, and the independent reproduction route.
